WELCOME to HRMSC! I’m very excited to be a part of this flagship program at Holy Rosary School. Here is our general syllabus for the year:

Holy Rosary Middle School Choir Course Description

This is a performance-based class that will focus on music literacy and learning new skills.

Through class work, we will be able to:

  • Apply unison and part-singing in an ensemble
  • Recognize and use standard musical terms and markings in the choral repertoire
  • Recognize and apply proper vocal techniques such as diction, phrasing, and care of the voice, with special emphasis on the changing needs of pre-teen and teenage voices.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and awareness of diverse choral repertoire including Sacred, Secular Classical, Folk songs, various popular styles, and World Music
  • Develop sensitivity towards musical text and emotional quality
  • Analysis and constructive criticism of musical performances
  • Demonstrate appropriate stage presence and audience etiquette
  • Participate in a variety of performances

Specific objectives include:

  • Acquire and apply sight-reading and ear-training skills, specifically through interval training and note-reading.
  • Recognize and read rhythms in various time signatures in duple and triple meter
  • Recognize and read rhythms of standard notation and rests
  • Recognize and identify key signatures of C, F, G, D, and Bb

MUSIC ACTIVITIES

  • Concerts and performances, including singing for church and community events. Attire will usually be their Formal uniform.
  • Classwork includes ear-training, theory assignments, and vocal ensemble work.
  • Projects will include reflections on group performance (analysis and constructive criticism), theory assessments, research notes, and cooperative problem-solving through ensemble singing.
  • Students will be asked for an occasional rehearsal and music performance outside of school time. All rehearsals and performances will be scheduled well in advance, and attendance is required.

Materials

Materials will be supplied by me and Holy Rosary School. These include a music binder, sheet music, and theory materials.

GRADING GUIDELINES

Students will be graded on:

Class Participation                                                 35%
Participation in concerts and performances          30%

Demonstration of growth and understanding of skills                      35%

We will use the three-point grading rubric:
3 = meeting standard
2 = approaching standard
1 = standard not met

DISCIPLINE EXPECTATIONS
Holy Rosary Middle School Choir adheres to the “ACHIEVE” check system for grades 5 – 8.
In addition, the specific Choir Class rules are posted in the choir room:

  • No talking while teacher is talking or demonstrating
  • Active watching and listening
  • Raise hand to speak
  • Bodies are at peace, and respectful of others’ personal space.
  • Physical movements and activity are Teacher-directed
  • Participate fully
  • Dedicated focus achieves success!
